SHORT ROADTRIP TO BOHINJ
FIRST DAY
This was our second short road trip with our Lea, so I kind of knew what to expect… I knew that we wouldn’t start the trip at the designated hour (we “usually” start 1 hour later than expected). And this time was no exception, but I was prepared so I didn’t make a fuss. I knew that the trip will last app. 2.5 hours and that is the perfect time for Lea to sleep during the day.
Our destination was Bohinjska Bistrica, which is the seat of the Municipality of Bohinj. Bohinj or the Bohinj Valley, is a 20 km long and 5 km wide basin in the Julian Alps, in the Upper Carniola region of northwestern Slovenia. It is traversed by the Sava Bohinjka river. Its main feature is the periglacial Lake Bohinj.
The name Bohinj originally applied to the village of Srednja Vas v Bohinju and was attested as such in written sources in 1065 as Bochingun. A popular myth says that Bohinj got its name because when God was giving land to people and, as he finished, he realized that he had forgotten about a small group of people, who were silent and did not insist like the others. Because of their modesty and patience, he felt pity for them. That is why he decided to give them the most beautiful land of all, which he had set aside for himself. It is called Bohinj because in Bohinj God is called Boh.
Bohinj began opening up for tourists years ago, with natural attractions being the biggest draw. Bohinj has become a starting point for tourists for day trips, for walks on the trails that run throughout the valley, and for mountaineering and climbing tours. It is also associated with the nearby Bohinj Railway, which includes the Bohinj Tunnel. In winter the valley becomes a winter sports center for skiers, snowboarders, ice climbers, as well as ice skaters on Lake Bohinj. During the summer, Lake Bohinj is frequented by swimmers, and with the Sava Bohinjka River, kayakers and fishermen as well. Biking, trekking, and climbing are also typical tourist activities in the area.
Bohinj has won us over with its nature when I was pregnant with Lea and this was the first time we were going back.
We have such luck that our baby loves car rides and usually sleeps through the whole ride or just looks through the window. So, I knew that when we’ll stop at lunch we’ll have a joyful toddler =)
We stopped at Pension Cerkovnik in Bohinj to have lunch and enjoy the view. The pension is by the river Motnica and has a view of Bohinj Lake and the Julian Alps.
Our apartment was located in Bohinjska Bistrica, 6 km from Bohinj Lake. As a ”fresh” mama to a 1-year old I was worried that the apartment wouldn’t have the basic equipment for a toddler (yes, I asked beforehand, but I was still worried until I saw…). There was everything basic and even more (baby crib, changing table, high chair, toys, books,…). It also had a large terrace with a stunning view of the highest mountain in Slovenia – Triglav and the southern Bohinj mountains. The owner of Nature apartment Kersnik (they are on Booking.com)is a very hospitable man who gave us very useful information about Bohinj Lake and the surroundings.
If you ever plan to go to Slovenia I warmly recommend you to visit Bohinjska Bistrica, Bohinj Lake and the surroundings and of course Nature apartment Kersnik. Bohinj is also very well known for fly fishing. Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps have the ideal natural environment for wild animals, butterflies, birds, and various alpine roses. All this contributes to rich catch with bates in the form of insects and it ensures you have a unique fly fishing experience in Europe.
When we unpacked we were lucky enough that the weather was kind of nice, so we decided to go on a 2-hour stroll around Bohinjska Bistrica.
SECOND DAY
Saturday miraculously began at 8.15 am! We couldn’t believe that our Lea slept so long! Usually, we are up from 6.00 am to 6.30 am. It seems that the alpine air has suited her. For today we had a plan to do some shooting of our product and then go around Lake Bohinj if the weather permits us (for the afternoon there were some rainstorms predicted). But the owner has told us that we shouldn’t listen to the weather prediction because there are mountains all around and no one can predict if the clouds will go through the mountain and bring rain or the mountains will break the clouds apart and there will be sunshine. And the mountains won that day! It was supposed to rain, but the clouds lost the game and the sun picked through the mountains, so we had a full and wonderful day!
On the way to Bohinj, we stopped at a pit stop because we were mesmerized by a big wooden bridge. We took a few shots here and continued to Bohinj.
As I mentioned before we had a plan to mix some work with pleasure… And even the ducks were curious what we’re up to =)
We had a plan to go all around Bohinj Lake, which is about 8 km and it takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on the stops you’ll take. We started to walk and turned around because the weather was uncertain. But we did manage to take a few stunning photos =)
When we came to the apartment the sun fought its way through the clouds and the rest of the day was sunny. That is why we decided to see what “Capricorn’s fairy path” has to offer. It is a thematic path, but it is not suitable for a stroller. We were “smart” enough to bring our carrier and once again stunning photos were made =)
THIRD DAY
The third day was dedicated to packing and being on time again, so no pictures here.
To recap our Bohinj road trip…It was an AMAZING experience, full of laughter and stunning views, and a special moment, which will forever stay in our hearts. We will definitely be back!
